The less time you have, the more you get done

I know this sounds super counterintuitive but it's true.

The less time you have, the more you get done.

Think about it for a minute.

Let's say you have a call with a customer or client and there's something you promised to deliver to them before the call.

You've had all week to create it and send it over, yet here it is 1 hour before the call and you finally start it.

And miraculously it gets done in just 58 minutes.

That's because of a little thing called Parkinson's Law which explains that work expands to the time you allot it.

Still think you need to work 40 hours a week to get 40 hours of work done?

According to WorkLife, the average worker only gets 4 hours and 12 minutes of work done during a typical 8 hour work day. That means that the MAJORITY of people could have 20 hour work weeks if they cut out the other busy work and distractions during the work day.

If you gave yourself half the time you usually do this week, I'd be willing to bet you'd get MORE high value tasks done.

Just a hunch. ;)

Cheers,
Summer

Feeling jazzed after a connection call? Mastermind meeting? Really good podcast episode? Instead of immediately doing the thing that your brain PROBABLY tells you to do - IE. Get MORE inspiration (start on that new idea, call that friend that always energizes you, try that new complex recipe you found on Pinterest) - try this first. As a life coach once told me, pair inspiration with motivation. USE that energy you just got to knock something you've been putting off on your to-do list....

This morning I woke up, took the dogs out, then grabbed a banana and sat at my desk. I stretched and said, "hey google, play some instrumental reading music" to activate my Nest and settled into my routine of reading one chapter of the book that is currently inspiring my writing, Bird By Bird. I highlighted all the brilliant sentences that popped out at me and at the end of the chapter, I feel buzzed with ideas and inspiration. I closed the book and turned on my typewriter. After over a month...

My sisters and I were busy looking at the dozens of options for pottery we could paint, feeling totally overwhelmed by how many decisions there were. Not only did we have to chose the piece of pottery we wanted (mug, vase, dragon?!) but also what design we wanted to use and the colors we wanted. There were ENDLESS options and minutes ticked by while we looked through binders of stencils. Then they told us that they close in an hour and we each felt panicked. It was my last night in town so we...
